About the Procedure
Hernia repair is a surgical procedure used to correct a hernia — most commonly an inguinal (groin) hernia — where a weakness in the abdominal wall allows internal tissue such as fat or bowel to protrude through, forming a visible lump that may worsen on standing, coughing, or exertion.
The operation can be performed using either an open surgical approach or a minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) technique, depending on the type, size, and complexity of the hernia. In many cases it is carried out as a day-case procedure, meaning patients return home the same day.
The goal of surgery is to provide durable reinforcement of the weakened area — most often using a surgical mesh — allowing patients to return to normal activities with improved comfort and quality of life.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
A single incision is made directly over the hernia site. The hernia is repositioned and the weakened abdominal wall is reinforced, commonly with a surgical mesh.
Several small incisions allow a camera and instruments to be inserted. Mesh is positioned internally to reinforce the defect — offering a faster recovery in selected patients.
Most modern hernia repairs use a mesh to strengthen the abdominal wall. Evidence consistently shows mesh repairs achieve lower recurrence rates than non-mesh techniques.
WHAT TO EXPECT
DAY OF SURGERY
30–90 minute operation under general or regional anaesthesia. Most patients discharged the same day with oral pain relief.
48–72 HOURS
Mild-to-moderate groin discomfort and swelling. Rest is encouraged, with short walks to aid circulation. Fatigue is normal.
1–2 WEEKS
Gradual return to light daily tasks. Wound kept clean and dry. Avoid heavy lifting, straining, or strenuous exercise.
2–6 WEEKS
Office-based work typically resumed within 1–2 weeks. Heavy manual work may require 4–6 weeks before clearance.
6+ WEEKS
Most patients return to full activity including exercise. Mesh integrates fully with surrounding tissue for lasting support.

Hernia repair is one of the most commonly performed general surgical procedures and is generally considered safe. As with all surgery, risks exist and will be discussed fully during your pre-operative consultation.

In some cases a hernia may be monitored rather than operated on immediately. However, hernias do not resolve on their own and may enlarge over time, increasing the risk of serious complications such as strangulation. Your surgeon will advise the most appropriate plan for your situation.
Neither technique is universally superior. The most appropriate approach depends on the size and location of the hernia, whether it is bilateral (both sides) or recurrent, your history of previous abdominal surgery, and your overall health and fitness for anaesthesia. Laparoscopic repair may offer smaller scars and a faster return to activity in selected patients, while open repair remains an excellent and widely used option for most hernias. Your surgeon will recommend the best technique following your consultation.
Most patients are discharged the same day and can resume light daily activity within a few days. Office-based work is typically possible within one to two weeks. Heavy manual work, strenuous exercise, or heavy lifting may need to be avoided for four to six weeks, depending on the procedure performed and how your body heals. Your surgeon will provide personalised recovery guidance at the time of discharge.
Open hernia repair produces a single incision scar in the groin area, which typically fades significantly over time. Laparoscopic repair results in several small incision marks that are generally less noticeable. Dissolvable sutures are commonly used, so removal of stitches is usually not required.
